I just learned that Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a stingray barb while shooting an underwater documentary. It's so sad! I know I'm not alone in saying I admired him so much, and enjoyed watching his "crazy" interactions with all those animals. He will be so missed.

It's roughly 25 hours since I heard. But now that I've seen a couple hours of interviews on the news channels--old ones of Steve and his family, and new ones of his friends and associates--I feel even more melancholy tonight.
What a remarkable and caring man. What a delightful, childlike wonder and innocence about his world. And what a warrior for the environment.
And... what deep sadness Terri, Bindi, and little Bob must be going through. They have my heartfelt condolences. Our sense of loss must be a hundred times more acute for them.
When asked, in one interview, how Steve would like to be remembered, he said: as a person who was passionate about the animals and the environment. The words are not exact, but passionate was the main one... and passionate is certainly how Mr. Irwin will be remembered.

A couple of people have already said what I feel... Steve became a like a fixture in our home. My 2 year old is just enrthralled with his animated personality. If I let her she would watch one of his DVDs continuously. I might let her now.
It was harder to explain to my 9 year old. When the 'Croc Hunter' Movie came out he put together his own 'Khaki' outfit so he could play with his 6 foot inflatable crocodile in the pool.
You never think that you could be so attached to someone you never actually met but it has a lot to do with appreciation. He was such a genuinely passionate person, he really cared about what he was doing.
Too much of society has become apathetic. More people should care (even just a little) about what they do every day.

You know how I found out about it? Someone actually asked a question here about Steve Irwin being dead. I went to Google and sure enough, there it was. I'll miss him for sure, because aside from being damned knowledgeable on the environment and animals, he had such enthusiasm and it was so contagious!
My heart goes out to Terri, Bindi and little Bob, but hope she continues his work. I can see Bindi taking over the reins of the zoo when she is older, though and I think that is what he had hoped she would do. Time will tell.
Gotta hand it to the Aussies. They had a gold mine in Mr. Irwin and such a fun, passionate man. He will be missed.

I don't know really what to say. I grew up watching his show. I'm 22 years old. I've seen every Crocodile Hunter episode......every documentary. I went to Australia because I wanted to see the wildlife that he showed the world. I don't think there is anyone I would have liked to have met more than Steve Irwin. The look in his eye, his devotion, the love he had for the animals; it was unique, and it touched my heart like nothing else. I just can't believe he's gone. Rest In Peace Steve.

Steve Irwin was the kind of guy that even though we didn't know him personally, most of us have invited him into our homes at least once in his lifetime. He was what we saw, a kind and caring man that loved not only his family but the animals that he came into contact with. I think he knew that the day would come when he pushed the envelope a little to far, but I also know that he died doing the very thing he loved most. He got us all a little closer to animals that most of us would have never seen otherwise. He has left a legacy behind for all of us and especially his children. When he died he took with him a natural energy and love for his work that noone will be able to duplicate. I grieve for his wife and kids and know that they will carry on with his love of nature. He will be deeply missed and remembered always. Rest in Peace Steve.

Steve Irwin was to wonderful for words. If all men were like him, kind to animals and so full of love and life this would be a better world. I always thought John Boy Walton was my kind of guy but Steve Irwin tops them all hands down. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. I know God has a special place for him in heaven and I hope he is with my Cocker Spaniel, Casey, who passed away several years ago.

Yes I'm so sadden of this sad situation that happen with the Crocodile Hunter. His show taught me to respect animals more and they all have a reason for being here and how to help save some who are being killed. My heart goes out to his kids and wonderful wife.I hope his wife can continue his shows and have the love he had on camera and off. He will truely be missed.

Peace be with the Irwin family. I am very sad at the news, and after watching coverage in Australia, it was obvious that he was so very loved. Not just there, but everywhere. At least he died doing what he loved most! If we could all go out doing something we loved, then death wouldnt be so bad!! I just hope they dont show it on tv. I know they have footage of it. But lets remember him alive. CRIKEY!!!!.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Believe me, Australia is in mourning. We are in absolute shock. I don't know what else to say. What a huge loss to world conservation. As another poster said earlier, we have lost a great human being today. It's so nice to see people from all over the world offering thoughts and sympathies. As an Australian that is very touching to see the international impact he had through his efforts to educate. My heart is so sad for his family members. Quite unbelievable.
