There are a lot of great war movies out there and Saving Private Ryan is definitely one of them. But I think Platoon was even better.
EDIT: Other strong candidates: Paths of Glory, Glory, Das Boot, All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Schindler's List, and Born on the Fourth of July (not all great war movies are about combat!).
Thanks for the fun question.

Saving Private Ryan was good, but I'd put these movies ahead of it (just to name a few):
Schindler's List (1993)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Napoléon (1927)
Idi i smotri (1985)
Paths of Glory (1957)
Untergang, Der (2004)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Hotel Rwanda (2004)
The Pianist (2002)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Das Boot (1981)
Battaglia di Algeri, La (1966)
The Great Escape (1963)

I loved and hated that movie because of the way it was filmed - especially the first 30 minutes - like you were actually there! Extremely well done, yet I think most of us that don't have to ever actually experience war, don't really want to know what it is really like - but we all should know!

It is one of the best indeed. Some others I can think of are Apocolypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, The Bridge Over River Kwai, and Platoon.

Saving deepest Ryan is my sought after of those because it replaced right into a more effective sensible portrayal of the most of the horrors or conflict and what most of the warriors went via. the skinny pink Line should be my 2d decision, also by sensible tale. Pearl Harbor is presented in third. good tale and human beings interactions, notwithstanding it does get somewhat comfortable. Inglorious Basterds is a good action picture, notwithstanding that is more effective comedy than a authentic conflict movie.

My all time fav. war movie is absolutely "Apocalypse Now". From what I heard, it is most realistic. Love the soundtrack and the visuals.
