I hate this one coffee shop that has great food and coffee but little tables and uncomfortable chairs. It also has poor lighting, bad acoustics (no sound proofing) and a dinky bathroom.
I want a coffee shop that has the ambiance of a comfortable living room. Cushie large sofa's and chairs, with wide table booths for Internet, with lots of electrical outlets, free wi-fi, and warm friendly service. You should have the feeling like your at a rich friends house.
The decor should have lots of warm earth tone colors, with lots of dark wood molding and top grade wood paneling. A ceramic tile or marble floor with lots of carpet mats to absorb sound.
No florescent lighting, incandescent halogen spots and reflected floods off the ceiling for indirect lighting where spots aren't needed in booths or over tables and seating areas.
Fresh homemade sandwiches, with fresh fruit and great coffee. Location is not important as long as it's in a peaceful place. Employees should be casual, helpful but not overbearing. They should make you feel like a friend over for lunch.
Live bands and entertainment is out of the question. A good coffee shop should be a retreat, a place of no distraction, a place where I can just relax and enjoy good coffee, food, and friends.

I don't go to coffee shops. The only thing I like about coffee is the aroma of it when the coffee is perking. I used to enjoy the aroma from little coffee shops in some of the shopping malls, but those little coffee shops are disappearing, and little coffee stands seem to be cropping up in grocery stores now. There's one in the Safeway store down the street from my home. It pushes Starbucks products.
I don't personally think that opening up a Coffee Shop is a wise idea, but that's me. You might have the personality and ability to make such a business a real success. If you think you do, please don't let me discourage you. Go for it.

i used to be a barista and when i go out for coffee i'm always disapointed that the baristas are not more firendly. I think thats a big part of the atmosphere, friendly interesting baristas. Not serving burnt coffee is a plus and being comfotable and not all chain looking, also free wifi, those are at the top of my list.

The likely answer would be the politeness of the employees but i understand that they have to deal with asshole people all day. The thing that bothers me is the round tables i personally like a nice square table where i can get some work done because my laptop and notebook have a hard time fitting on those little round tables.

I personally like going to Tim Horton's for their coffee. I usually go through the drive through. I've gone in it a few times to sit and talk with friends. I may get a muffin or bagel from time to time, but their coffee is the main reason I go there. I can tell you that most of my friends go there for the same reason...coffee! Usually the kind we get is a large double double...to go! Hope this helps!

My favorite aspect of our local coffee shop is that they have Wi-Fi access... unfortunately, it's so weak it's unusable.
There. Two birds with one stone. I was going to say that you can't smoke inside, but I guess if I'm going to kill myself with cigarettes the least I can do is get some fresh air while I do it.

Good-
*Free Wifi
*quality coffee
*real espresso machines not something that just spits out a "espresso drinks" hire and train baristas
*free trade coffee
*Cheaper dine-in cup refills
*vegetarian and vegan snacks
Bad-
*FOAM CUPS!!!! God I hate foam cups or the paper cups with the sprayed on layer of foam. Get good paper cups for take out and white ceramic cups for drink in.
*Rude baristas
*uneducated baristas, they must know their coffee and drinks

Who cares? Coffee sucks and I have no desire to mingle with hipsters and artfags.
