i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Argh no!!! Steve Steve!!! He brought a new dimension to the animal world and change the negative views of the wild into good ones in our eyes. My dad said he'll eventually die if he continues like that(Doing the dangerous things at his shows, putting himself in great danger) And two days ago I thought perhaps he'll really die from the thing he loves most. And darn, there he is!!! Oh WHY??? I don't actually CARE if it was a stingray or not. Ok, perhaps i DO care. But I really do hope not by a stingray. Dying by a stingray is excrutiating. It's a stingray or not, the hospital will figure it out. Perhaps he has mistaken it for a surfboard or stepping stone/rock. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I am surprised. He seemed to be able to mess with any species up close and personal without getting bit. And stingrays' just seem so gentle, and absolutely not aggressive. How must that stingray have been acting>> In which case Steve should have known the signs I guess. It really sucks when the world loses such an enlightening person. Think if he had of survived for many years. What he might have accomplished. And what he did accomplish. Destiny my friends...

Reports from Steve's crew say that he was swimming above the ray in the water when it turned suddenly and the tail flicked upwards where the barb pierced the left side of Steve's chest. And yes a lot are surprised, especially here in Australia that he died this way. He's done this his entire life. He may have came across as a larrikan but he was no fool. What a tragedy.

I was just reading up on stingrays and an article states that they do NOT attack people, so I imagine there was some type of provocation on somebody's part. The backwards barbs are supposed to be difficult to remove once they puncture the skin. I'm curious to know how he got the stinger out.

I was surprised he was killed by a stingray.... I always thought that if and when he died, it would be something massive, like a shark.

Well, I am a little surprised that it was a stingray. I was sure it'd be a snake.
