How does one go about making one of these bracelets? They are white and made of cotton string and look like a braid or some type of complex braid.

If what I'm thinking of is what you're thinking of then I think it's a braid with four strands. Try asking this in the fashion section or maybe crafts and hobbies.

There are many books available that teach you how to make all kinds of sailor's knots, including the ones you mentioned. I just saw one at Barnes and Noble a couple of days ago. I would suggest you Google "Sailor's knots" and you will come up with something.

I did some on ship in 1942. Make a few loops
around something, then start weaving, over and under,
over and under etc. Try one.
