They suffered under the illusion that they had pitching to start year, and it turned out to be just that...an Illusion. And in the American League, where even the worst teams bring offense and can POUND bad pitching to a bloody pulp, the Red Sox got Pounded. Bad Starting Pitching and a HORRID Bullpen..thats what happened to the BOSOX.... everyone wants to say it was injuries, bbut it wasnt. If you looked at the Red Sox record before they played the Yankees that 5 games and got exposed as a fraud team, their record was MADE on beating up the teams in the WEAK! National League during interleague play. Their record against American League teams was pathetic! and is even more so now. And this is back BEFORE they lost Varitek and Nixon, etc... That pitching of theirs wasnt beating any good teams and was barely scrapping by the mediocre teams and then they ran headlong into the yankees who proceeded to expose every flaw they have. which begin with No starting Pitching, and No Bullpen

They let too many pitchers get away over the last few years like Lowe and Arroyo and of course don't have Damon any more. The pitching is not good enough now to be a serious contender and the Red Sox need to get pitching if they are to serious contend again. Ortiz and Manny are great hitters but not enough to win by themselves. Varitek's injury hurt a lot also and Nixon would have helped also. I think the bottom line is the pitching is not good enough to win the division.

The sox were .500 and over against all current divison leading teams (before Varitek got injured). Their pitching was not great but their offense was enough to carry them. That is until Varitek got hurt and the pitching fell apart because of it. As they had already lost Nixon this was a problem but then the players just kept dropping. If you dont believe that injuries were the problem then lets look at records. Before Varitek was injured, the sox were 62-40 but since then they have been 11-24.

First and foremost, they allowed Johnny Damon to leave, which is good, because I'm a Yankee fan, and he's helped us a lot. He made the offense go and got on base for guys like Ortiz and Ramirez. Lowell and Loretta had great first halves but have really cooled down the last couple of months. If you get out Ortiz and Ramirez, then they are easy to beat, as Boston's line-up after that is pretty average, at best.

Second, Schilling has gotten old during the second half, and Beckett looks lost now that he is in the American League with better line-ups. He is also afraid to throw anything but fastballs. Their pitching in general overachieved early in the season and now it's horrible.

Third, they ran into the Yankees who crushed them in a 5 game series, which, for all intents and purposes, put them in a funk and sent them in a tailspin.

Fourth, injuries have also had something to do with it, but that is also an excuse, as the Yankees had overtaken them BEFORE all the guys got injured or sick. Having those guys hurt just allows the Yanks to put the A.L. East away earlier.
