A coffee house I frequented early mornings had of course the best tasting coffee, inhabited by the same opinionated but interesting crowd and those tourists that would stroll in and gualk then sit and make themselves at home. Small enclaves that a person/s could sit undisturbed and have private talks.
Hard covered books havockley stacked their encased shelving. faint music in the backgroud set a mood. a newspaper or three would lay open to a topic of interest in vacated booths that whispered for you to come over and sit. A simple menu on the wall over the hostess/cashier said: Coffee .50 cents/hospitality Free. Small items clung to and pictures of interest on the walls. In short..an interesting place to be.
The owner had been given an cash offer from a firm in California to purchase the coffee house which the owner had not even dreamed or thought about selling out. the owner was overwhelmed with such a large amount cash. As it turned out the deal was closed in two weeks, she could not turn down a huge offer.
So with the new owners came in. A name was affixed outside in a bold brandish style. Inside an onimus sign we all dreaded to see said "NO SMOKING". none of the aforementioned no longer existed. We all felt that something important to us was taken away. even the non-smokers who dwelt within felt the same way. We arrived to conclusion that our sense of community had been invaded by money mongers.
So as it turned out all of the customers who had a sancturary, a place to have that sense of community was tore apart and we no longer wanted anything to do with it. In a slow manner of about 5 years all of the best places to be and to shop, eat were taken away by the faceless Corporations who believe because thay have a brand and what they offer is better. thay didn't care about community. it was all about tourism and the money. So, perhaps what I would like to see is a return of those establishments with a feel for community and promote the freedoms we once enjoyed.

GOOD - relaxed atmosphere, uncrowded seating so that you aren't on someone's lap, and you can talk privately, quiet lighting so that you dont have a shaft of light in your face, plants and green - who cares if they are fake, quiet music - instrumental , lots of variety, lots of parking, smiling, happy friendly staff.
BAD - crowded seating, noisy, poor parking, glaring lights, rude and tired staff, jagged high pitched music, etc.
