its a marine fish that glides/swims through coastal waters with what appears to be 'wings'. They have a whip like tail that is razor sharp with barbed/serrated edges that are coated with a toxic venom. Stingrays are generally shy and not aggressive. When they are approached they will swim away, unless they view you as a predator. They tend to rest in the sand which is where humans tend to step on them, alarming the stingray and inducing the toxic sting. Generally the sting is localized to the foot. Severe pain and swelling are symptoms from the sting and aggravated tremendously if the stinger is embedded in the wound. Stingray wounds can be fatal if the stinger has severed an artery or been inflicted into the pelvic area or chest. From the information that I read about the Crocodile Hunter he was stung in the heart.
