When you buy a stamp at the automated postal center at the post office, you are asked for the zip code where the letter is going. The stamp has an area on it that is impossible to read. Is the zip code for the letter encodes in this space? If I make an error in the zip code, can I use the stamp anyway or will the letter be misdirected?

If you enter a zipcode that is different from the one on the letter itself, the postage will be void. The letter should be returned for lack of postage if the system is working properly.
