Certified Financial planners need to complete a course of study before using the CFP designation.
From the Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics:
"Personal financial advisors may obtain the Certified Financial Planner credential, often referred to as CFP (R), demonstrating extensive training and competency in financial planning. This certification, issued by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, requires relevant experience, the completion of education requirements, passing a comprehensive examination, and adherence to an enforceable code of ethics."
If an individual has been so certified, you can check on the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards website - they have a searchable database.
By looking up CFP® professionals, you will find individuals that are currently authorized by CFP Board to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and certification marks. Planners who have been publicly disciplined by CFP Board will also be listed.

You don't need to be on a list, anyone can use a CFP. Look in the phone book. Or try search on the internet.
