The internal "modem" is for dial-up access. It does not manage or connect to a high-speed broadband connection.

ADSL and Cable modems have ports that come in two flavors: USB and ethernet. Most are ethernet capable, so that means the modem has to connect to an ethernet port on your laptop (and if it has USB ports, then it connects to a USB port on your laptop).

The internal modem, however, has a different connector altogether. It's the same as your phone line, called RJ-11, and is much smaller in size than an ethernet clip. So, not only is the internal modem restricted to dial-up, but the connector on the cable from your high-speed modem won't physically fit either.
