crisagi is correct. They are not considered illegal.

Now with that said, if you go out and stab somebody with one then you ARE in trouble. LOL

It depends on the state (or city/county) and how they are used.

Generally, if the foil is not sharpened, and is properly blunted on the tip, it counts as sports equipment rather than a weapon.

As always, laws vary by state.

Epees are not illegal - so long as you are not concealing it, nor are planning on doing any bodily harm to anyone. In and of itself it is no different than a baseball bat.

For example... a baseball bat is not illegal, but if you are concealing it in your sleeve or behind your back and then bash someone's head in with it, you can be charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Though you might run into problems with the law if you were to go traipsing through the streets of an urban center with uncovered "swords," the answer is no.

everything is illegal. however, the importance of following the law is directly proportional to the amount of effort that is put toward enforcing it.
