1. Boston
2. Chicago
3. LA
4. New York
in that order. New York and LA may be good for shopping but if you're looking at an overall place to live, go to Boston if you can afford it.

New York. But Boston is also a great city. Overall, I will give it to New York. But I prefer the living conditions in Boston. I'm not paying $2000 rent just to live in box cause I want to live in NYC.
I went to visit a friend in New York. He lived near Central Park with a friend. They were paying over $2000 for an apartment that was so tiny and was not at all impressive. I pay less than half of what they pay living in Boston, and I felt like my apartment could have made "Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous" (Whatever happened to that TV show by the way?)
So though New York is a better city, I will rather live in Boston and visit NYC as often as I can (which I do anyway).
I have not been to LA recently, but I heard it is more like a town than a city. Everything is so spread out, and you need a car to go anywhere. I heard Chicago is a great city, but I don't think is as good as NY or Boston.

New York is the best city among the city listed.
We have everything here in terms of people, religion, food, "stuff". It is a city for the very poor to the very wealthiest. We have the oldest and farthest-reaching public transportation system. We have the most winning World Champion baseball teams, 2 basketball teams, 2 hockey teams, 2 football teams, U.S. Tennis Open. 4 zoos, 3 gardens, many museums (of every variety).

Honestly, it depends on what you are looking for. All have there things that make it special. I can say that LA is not like the others. Each has their problems and specialties.
If you are looking for fabulous city life, then consider visiting. I have been to all of them...and I like NY the best because of the culture and the food. There is absolutely everything there including too many people. But that is city life. If you are considering moving for a job....just visit all of them. You will find the one that grabs your attention.
But for me. It would be NY.

Those cities are all completely different, so it really depends what you're looking for. I love Boston, with probably Chicago coming in second.
