It depends on the frequency that the station is using. If another station used the same frequency...that one station may have to drop in power at night time. Usually AM stations are like that.
FM stations that have different formats and depending on where they are located either use overnight DJ's or like the place where I work...go on a satellite network. Very few stations use analog (tape) these days. It's easier to hook up to a network and rebroadcast that.
The station where I work used a network out of Colorado for the FM side which is Country and Western.(p.u.!) And we are affiliates with the ABC Network located in Dallas, TX for the AM side which plays "Oldies". These networks are 24 hour formats and can run all day if need be. They send tones over the airwaves that "shoot off" our commercials that are local. There are set times during the hour that this happens...and we can program our local weather and commercials at least 3 times during every hour of the day.
Hope that helps you.

Most stations (With the exclusion of the smallest ones ) carry on 24/7. Most play music through the night, and some have really bad chat shows.

Most of them do, it depends on the station. Yes, they play music all night, too, if they happen to be on.

Some do...and some go off the air. AND, some drop power way down, so you may not pick them up as you did during the day. I'm a former radio DJ.

We live in California. And most of our FM stations play all night. I guess it might depend on were you live.

Most do, but 99 % of them suck around 6:00 am on Sunday morning. Crummy Sunday news /special interest to no one programs. Sheesh. Who wants to listen to "let me tell you about your hair falling out and how to stop it" or "The way to keep your flower garden grown ALL SUMMER LONG" crap THAT early.
