Many people use poetry as an outlet on life, but its so uncommon to find a market for it. Artists paint and sell paintings, writers sell novels, but poets get no credit. Is that really so or is my opinion way off key?

In a sense you are right.
The popularity and general interest in poetry has certainly gone down. Only a minority still read, write and appreciate it on a personal level.
Pictorial artworks have a market because they have resale value. But poetry has only aesthetic value, hence the difference.

There is still a market for it. I see poetry occasionely on the bestseller list, not usually, but some of it gets published.
Remember, poetry is not dead, not at all. But fewer people read these days. Most of us are getting too lazy with tv, satellite, sports, etc. And of all the books read, poetry is a small percentage of whats read, so yes the chances of hitting it big are small. But don't give up, people are still writing and reading poetry.
My Mother took up writing poetry when she was in her 60's and died several years ago at the age of 80. She was published in several anthologies. Poetry gave her a great way to express her feelings, share her thoughts and basically was an outlet for the worries and concerns she had. So keep writing it and enjoy!
