I agree with kris13iam. I'm surprised this hasn't been called a "freak accident" yet because that's what it sounds like.
"In rare cases, the stingray's powerful spine has penetrated a person's abdomen or chest causing severe injury."
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/stingray_injury/page2_em.htm
"The venom in the barb affects the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) and can even cause irregular heart rhythms and in some cases cause the heart to stop beating all together!"
http://www.discoveringhawaii.com/SF_Medicine/StingingMarineLife/StingRays.html
According to the link below, cardiac injuries by a sting ray are rare (even worldwide). This link is a medical abstract which reports of only one known survivor of a cardiac sting ray injury such as Irwin's. Not good odds. It sounds like he would have needed a hospital, with a surgical team much closer than a fast boat ride and a helicopter away. Poor guy.

May he rest in peace. My thoughts go to his wife, Terri, and two children, Bindi Sue and Bob.

Yes, I did eventually expect him to be horribly injured or killed filming the creatures that he loved. Did I expect it soon....not at all. I expected him to be still jumping around the crocs when in his seventies...and Bob gets in trouble and he jumps in to save his boy and died or got chomped. He expected to die in the ocean....so I could see a salty getting him. But to die in such an unusual way...somehow is like him too...after all...no ordinary death would be fit for him. He didn't die of a slow drawn out illness....it was quick and doing what he liked to do. He lived a great life, and even if stolen too soon....what better legacy then knowing you changed the world and haveing tears being shed by strangers who loved you. I wish he'd had more time with his kids...they are the ones I feel sorry for. Him...naw...he lived a great life......cared for animals....traveled the world...had a happy family...was adored by the worlds children and somehow left them to continue his work. Good Job Steve.....

Steve became a moron for taking reckless opportunities with animals. i'm a scuba diver and could in no way enter the water without wetsuit and vest, which will have prevented the wear to Steve. He became a daredevil with animals... it rather is for particular!

qdaughter received a text message about it and she asked me I told her "not likely" then later found it was true.
The most amazing thing is that he was killed by a "harmless" creature. The "sting" anywhere else would have hurt a bit but he would have gotten over it quickly. If the ray had been considered dangerious he would have taken more care.
I am sure that his wife and kids need our prayers.

OMG I didn't hear about that. I like that guy! Sorry this happened to him and his family but there's something in the wild you just don't play around with. I would have though it would happen by a crock. At least he died doing what he loved in his life.
May he rest in peace and much love to his family :)

No, did not expect it at all. He didn't get hurt when he was doing the dangerous stuff, and yet, here he goes during a documentary for the Barrier Reef. Go figure.
For sure, I will miss him and his silly humor.

He seemed a bit to cocky on TV however Ive been told they used every safety feature possible.
If two people were more meant for one another it indeed was his wife whom he found in the states.
My regards to her,and to his family.

No, oddly, because at the same time that I would never expect he'd put himself in such grave danger that he'd actually die doing his thing...I'd be amazed at what dangerous situations he'd put himself in!

I didn't know he had died until I saw your question. No I never would have believed that he would have died like that. So sad, a great loss.

Of course. He was a dare devil and a risk taker. I would expect him to die no other way!
