hi, it makes your computer run faster, but there is no reason it should take 3 hours to defrag!... so I'm wondering if you might have some spy ware or a virus slowing down your PC... also do you run a clean up on your hard disk/ temp files ?that will also help your PC run faster...

Yeah it takes a while to defragment, but it's good for your computer. Here's a concrete example. let's say you install a few programs that takes up 10 small files. These file will be set up sequentially and won't be fragmented. Then you decide to delete a program right in the middle of ur 10 files. Now there's some unused space between the other files, so when you put in another file in it will start using that unused space. But the problem lies when your file is bigger than that unused space. Since the computer can't fit everything in, it will split the file up to fill that space and store the rest of the file at some other usused space. This is called fragmentation.

Fragmentation is bad because now, when the computer wants to read the file, it's gonna start reading then see a jump to another location, so it has to go look for the other piece of the file which takes up time uselessly. Defragmenting means the computer the computer rearranges the files so that the files don't get split up like that. Makes your computer faster at reading files (probably not noticeable to the eye unless things got really bad).

Year ago there was a definite reason to defrag your computer. Hard drives were much smaller and the software controlling the hard drives was not as sophisticated. What defraging does is to take files and that have been written to several different places on your drive and move them to one contiguous place this makes them quicker to access. You can stop in the middle of a defrag and as long as you use the windows cancel command you won't do any damage.

It makes the fast access of files on Harddisk.

As the disk(plotor) in side the Harddisk rotates, when you are saving files will be saved as chunks in diffrent locations, these locations can be continues or ramdom pick.

If a file is stored in random locations, then accessing of the file will take some time( not hrs or minutes just less seconds). so defragment will allow all these files in maxmum continous locations.

when u save or del files in a drive, u will leave fragmented file here and there. when you defragment the drive, it sorts out the files nicely and arrange them. It makes writing files to the drive easier.
