Apart from the association with the Vatican, to me it brings to mind their massacre while defending the Tuileries in Paris (1792). There were two corps performing guard duties for the kings of France.

They were buried at the Expiatory Chapel near the Madeleine; there stands a memorial, and also an altar on the place where Louis XVI's and Marie-Antoinette' bodies were found.
