Gay isn't something that's obvious from the outside. It's a choice someone makes. The only way you can know for sure it to ask.

I think the safest way is if they are the type to readily admit that they are gay. Otherwise, you really can't be sure. Be careful in high school -- people there are not always what they seem to be. It seems it's a good place to experiment and switch from one group to another all around.
Birds of a feather tend to flock together though.
Still, years from now, you will be surprised at who actually was gay, lesbian, or bi in your high school.
Once again, be careful. Unless you know someone very well, it is not a good idea to ask them their sexual preference, especially in a volatile place like a high school.

You can never tell these days. Try to know the person first. There are some of those who are closetted, afraid to come out. Of course there are the flaming queens who you can spot from the distance. You could test him/her by asking his/her opinion on gay related issues or even a movie with a gay character in it. It might give you some hint.

watch their eyes as another guy walks by as opposed to a hottie. The eyes tell all. Just be sensitive 'cause you don't want to be harassed if you approach the wrong person. If you are interested in someone, kind of hang around, see waht he's into, start a conversation. good luck.

Spend some time getting to know a couple of them. Make friends, do stuff and hang out. If they are gay, you'll find out, if they are not gay, you'll have an extra friend. It's all good.

Start a gay club, if there is not already one to join at school, and see who joins. Good Luck and dont be concerned about the hateful responses you get to your question; those are usually from ignorant and terrified closet queens.

there's a few ways u can tell, but u really have to be gay to really notice a gay person.
but, me and my cousin say tht u can by how they look at u, how they act around u, how they dress(but u can't always go by looks), and it's sometimes tha conversations they have w/ u...
those are a few things to go by

you could listen to the way they talk or in class watch who they really stare at and kind of survey what sex they seem more comfortable around if they are real nervous around guys then they are probably gay

Careful.
You may end up suspended or charged with a hate crime for asking someone if they are gay these days.
Does their sexual orientation really matter?
If you want to date one of them, why not just ask them to hangout?
