Folic acid is essential in helping to prevent neural tube defects as well as promoting healthy brain development. Most Dr's do suggest that a woman trying to concieve start taking folic acid as it is most beneficial in the early stages of pregnancy and since you generally won't know your pregnant until 4-8 weeks it's best to be prepared.

it's to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. it's such a pity to see babies born with problems that could have been prevented by the mum by proper nutrition and care. (no alcohol, drugs, smoking raw foods & be careful of cat litter
