Since you are asking in Computer & Internet section, I'll assume that you mean the master and slave setting on IDE peripherals.

On an Parallel ATA drives you are able to hook up upto two devices per channel. Since each device has its own ATA interface, you have to designate one of the device to be the "master" device to handle the flow of information from both devices to the ATA controller. When you designate a master you are effectively telling the slave device to go through the master device to communicate with the ATA controller and not use its own interface.

Contrary to what people are posting you do not necessarily need to boot from a MASTER drive, but you must designate a master or a slave drive if you are using two drives and not using cable select to predetermine master and slave configuration. Cable Select means you pick master or slave by virtue of the location of the drive on the ribbon. The first drive connector on the ribbon is designated master and the second drive connector on the ribbon is slave.

A master and slave in computer talk is the way two devices are connected to a cable called IDE. IDE is a cable that has 3 places to connect stuff to. The very bottom one connects to the main board (motherboard) and the other 2 is where you connect your devices (hard drive, cd-rom, ZIP). The very top connection is called the "master" and the middle connection is called the "slave". On the devices that you connect to these, they have something called jumpers that you have to configure to where you are connecting your device to the cable. You have to set the device jumper to master or cs if you want to place it on the very top connection of the cable. And same goes for slave. There is a setting on the device where you set it to CS which means "Cable Select". So depending on where you connect it on the cable, it will get assigned master or slave. This is done so that your computer will know that they are 2 separate devices. I think it is called master and slave because master is on top of slave.

The "Master" and "Slave" are designations given to peripheral devices (usually hard drives). In the case of a hard drive, the "Master" peripheral device is where the OS (operating system) is located and the "Slave" device is used as extra storage. These designations are important because during system start up, the BIOS need to identify which hard drive the OS is located on in order to correctly start the system.

Are you asking this question related to hard drives...If you are then here goes the answer..
Master means this hard drive will be the main hard drive containing the OS.So when you start your PC ,the system will read the OS files from the master drive.
Slave means which provide an extra space to your hard drive i.e This hard drive will run under master drive and needs the OS to be fully booted to use the hard drive

You have 2 hdds or optical drives, one is slave and one is master. If both of them are master or slave the sametime, then the bios will get confused so one drive slave and one drive master.

Easy enough to get 10 points *grin*

You have many hard drivers for example........ lets say you have 3 hard drives in your computer.... for argument sake lets say they are all inside the computer.....

Your bootable drive (the one your computer has the OS (windows) on, like your "C:" drive, that is your MASTER, all other drives are SLAVE drives, because they are truly controlled via commands through the MAIN drive that is the MASTER....

So you can have many slaves, but only one master, aint that the truth!!

HAHA

Do I get my 10 points?

In the PC world, Master is the main hard drive that your computer boots from. it has the operating system on it, The slave is a 2nd hard drive used to store data. ( they are also sexual slang terms, but that's for another forum, lol )

It is a part of BDSM. The man is the master and the woman is HIS slave. She does whatever he wants her to do without question.
