I'm an affectionate person...and sometimes wish that I could give str8 (and gay males for that matter), a hug without feeling out of place.

Guys in my area hug each other fairly often upon greeting, especially if they haven't seen each other in a while. But it's a quick pat on the back kind of hug, nothing lingering. It's not a long, drawn-out kind of hug.

It's kind of strange that it's considered all right for women to hug each other all the time, but not men. It's nothing I've really thought about very much.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm "as straight as an arrow". Some would even consider me "homophobic". But I can honestly tell you that I've hugged both men & women alike. It depends a lot on the setting & the relationship you have with each person. This is one area in which I wish our society was more open.

I, as a woman, would also like to feel more comfortable with greeting our loved ones (friends included) with a physical gesture. Sometimes you have to figure in your head, "is it proper to hug here?" I guess I've inherited the European style of affection. I would prefer to hug everyone who knows me (Or double cheek kiss). On a special occasion I give hugs all around. But normally people are too afraid of affection. I don't want to sleep with everyone!! But I love my friends!!

I'm a woman and I don't really dig hugging other women - although I feel obliged to sometimes, especially if they get weepy.
Still, I'd rather not.

I like hugging men more ;)

So it's kind of the opposite situation - men aren't 'supposed' to hug other men, though they may want to. And women ARE 'supposed' to hug other women, though they may not want to!

Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

Yes, so do I. It's all so cultural. In Greece, it's done a lot -- but males are much more cautious about hugging women than here.

I wish we could too. I completely know that feeling. Oh well, back to artificially distancing myself from people so that I can fit in.
