I once read that he painted 2 versions of the portrait, and 1 of them is held privately in France.
Munch painted 4 versions of "The Scream", the best known of which was recently recovered after a 1991 robbery in Norway.
Any information would be appreciated.

i think there are two copies, but i also think that the mona lisa was adjusted a few times, on the canvas. i think tthay the louvre ran some scans on it, and there were about 4 layers of paint beneath what is actually visible

He painted over the same painting many times. They say he took 10 years just painting and repainting the mouth. He carried the picture around with him and showed all of his friends, then revised it again and again.
