they weren't the most popular 6 years ago, when i was in high school. The jocks and cheerleaders were. Depends on where you live, I would guess, considering I didn't live in a big city and there weren't really "gangsters" around. We didn't have much ethnicity or any kind of difference, so that's basically how it worked. I think it's still like that at the HS i went to. small town.

If you're looking to a definite answer to your question, ask yourself this... "Why do female protaginists in a film fall for the bad guy instead of the nice guy?"
The answer is simple because they (gangsters) have an element of danger to them.
People are drawn to them in some way, although are ashamed to admit because they bring a "risk" factor that they themselves are too afraid to do.
Yeah I agree, they represent all that's bad/ ugly/ evil but they thrive on adrenaline contrary to the rest of us who prefer to play by the rules, therefore remain "safe".

Gangsters are popular in High School...a mere 4 years. Then they drop out of society to become the world's lowlifes and inmates.
The quiet, nerdy, victims go to college and become the leaders and successsful people in society that yeild the fruits of their labors.
