curtains are made of Cloth and if you inspect curtain closely you will find that there are small suare hole between two threads. Air is trapped between these gap and Air is a bad conductor of HEAT so heat cant flow out through these gaps. so curtains are useful in reducing energy lost through windows

They block the sun light causing your A/C to kick on less. And they also block any cold that may come through your windows reducing the need to turn up the heat.

It slows down heat transfer from outside and inside much the
same as a few extra blankets added to your bed will keep you
warmer by slowing your body heat from leaving to the room
(outside) environment.
