Look into the new HP C3180 or C4180 (C4180 if you would like to do photos as well. Both these machines are inexpensive and the ink prices are much lower than what you are paying now. In fact, you can buy both cartridges for the C3180 for about $15 each. Both these printers will copy/print/and scan, but if you only want to print and don't need scanning or copying, go for the HP 5440 deskjet printer. A good, inexpensive printer with cheap ink.

I would recommend a Laser Printer, if you're going to be printing alot of notes. A Black-and-White laser printer is good enough. The toner (the ink) is expensive, but you can print up to 1000-2000 pieces before the ink runs out.

At the moment, what you're using ( Canon s520 ) is a colour bubblejet printer: I guessed ink is expensive as sometimes the colours are used to mix the colour black as well.

Why don't you discuss with your parents or your siblings, or even classmates / room-mates on investing the laser printer together?

You can use the Canon s520 only when you need coloured pictures, which I assume, you wouldn't be required to print coloured stuff as often for school. Use sparingly then!

Well, how about 60 cartridges for $30. I'm in UK, so I looked up the USA costs for you on the system I use on my EPSON. My 'ploy' was to look for 'Continuous Ink System' first, then find which printers I could use the system on, then match the 'candidates' up. Beware that some systems are not 'pre-filled'. The system costs may look expensive until you realise that for (on the link below) you get 60 cartridges worth of ink ($250 in normal cartridge costs)... recover the cost of your printer by the time you have used the ink!!!

well I've leraned my lesson! If you wanna be cheape look for a printer with a great dela of INK!!! Dont' buy a cheapy one that will cost you a fortune in ink refill s I'm not kidding they sell each color for $40+ each!

i went today to look for a niffy one. and I see all the combo ones hold like 4 oz of ink! and than the refills are $46. I thin I was looking at the Canon scanner [rinter fax and photprinter all in one. than the staples guys showed me the ink thing!NO way! It was one small black and one 4 oz that holds three colors!

there are tricks to refilling these but printer companies are getting tricky trying to sell more ink.

Anyway I left the store!

Go to a local store (Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City) or whatever you have near you and state your question to a salesperson. They should be able to help you make a choice.
If possible, go to a store that sells both printers and ink so they will know the ink price for sure!

Go to a site that sells ink and check out which printers have lowest prices for ink:

I think Lexmark is pretty low and I thought some Canon products were pretty low. I have Hp and it is really high.
