GB stands for gigabyte.
1 gigabyte = 1000 megabytes.
A GB of memory would be adequate for most uses.
80GB or 100GB would be disk sizes. Again, adequate for most purposes.

You probably would like to read this for extra information:
Processor:
If you hear about the processors, that indicates how fast your computer works, or how much information it's able to process at the same time. What you'll probably need at the moment would be a Intel Centrino. That is probably the latest technology.
Hard-disk Space:
There's where your 80GB and 100 GB comes in. That indicates how much information your computer will be able to store: such as the stuff you'll be required to download (school notes / multimedia assignments and your mp3 songs, etc). Usually, the more hard disk space you have, the better it would be.
Video-Card:
Get the best Video Card adaptors, as that'll enable you to view rich graphics upon your monitor. Will be crucial if you're a avid game player.

GB = gigabyte = about 1000 MB (megabytes)
Consider that as a measure of how much to put on a disk or CD.
As a measure, consideer that a CD hold about 700mb or .7GB. You could hold dozens of CD music or files on a 40G drive.
Usually the operating system takes a couple of GB.
A typical high quality photo may be 1 MB. You would hold 1000 of them in 1 GB.
I think you get the idea.
As an analogy, consider getting a file cabinet to hold papers. You could get a 1 drawer, 2 drawer, or 4 drawer, depending how much paper you want to hold. Similar for disk drives of various GB sizes.
Also, check the "speed" of the CD or disk drive. A faster disk drive is faster performing. 5600rpm is slower than 9000rpm.
This can also be a measure for memory size. 1 GB is a good memory size. 100GB is not sold in laptops, therefore I know you are discussing disk drives.

GB is gigabytes, it a measure of storage space or your hard drive. The more gigabytes the more information you can have on your computer and if you have more GB then your computer won't be as slow once you start storing information on it. For school purposes you'll probably be storing text documents on the computer- text document only take up a couple a kilobytes, which isn't much at all. However if you plan on storing media files, such as music or videos as well get as many gigabytes as you can.

GB = giga bytes
its a measurement of size of data in a computer.
To give you a perspective, a usual CD stores around 600 MB of data and 1000 MB = 1GB
An mp3 song is roughly of 5MB size.
In your case, these measurement probably mean the size of the Hard Disk (which is the place where all your computer data will be stored)
I would recommend that any PC with a Hard Disk less than 40GB is impractical in today's world.
Hope this helps!

Gb, Mb can refer to a lot of differnt things in a computer 1024 mb= 1gb. When it is talking about the hard drive i would suggest 100 gb. Ram 512mb and up. Video card, 64mb up. The more the better. And you can later upgrade.

GB means GigaBytes
Mostly refer to Harddisk capacity other than computer random access memory (RAM).
Harddisk capacity can be obtain from 1GB until over 100GB.The higher the GB's amount the pricier it gets. Recommended that for educational purposes you can get the Harddisk capacity from 40-80GB.
For RAM usually it doesn't get until 1GB but you can add the RAM until it does.Higher the RAM amount more faster the computer can be.but for your situation it is better to take from 256-512MB only.

the 1GB is probably the RAM. The more ram the better. 1GB is probably fine for what your doing but 512MB is way too little (1GB = 1024MB)!
80GB is also way fine for surfing the web, storing music and photos. But if your doing alot of digital video editing you'll need alot more then 100GB.
About John G.: 40GB of ram is probably impossible. It's way too much. 16gb of ram on Apples best computer cost's about $10,000!

It usually means the size of the hard drive. GHZ ( gigahertz ) is the cpu speed, also 1GB could be the amount of ram. Check the specs before buying one, hope this helped.
