SYDNEY, Australia - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia’s northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.
Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said Irwin, 44, whose television show “The Crocodile Hunter” won international acclaim and popularized the phrase “Crikey”, was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.
Sky Television also reported that Irwin had been stung by a sting ray.
Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.
Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland, state government sources say.
The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, sources say.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.
Mr Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.
It's believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.
Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

I'm sorry that Steve Irwin died, but i'm not surprised, he bothers those animals, knowing they are irritated by that and want to be left alone.

he was filming a documentary this morning up in cairns and was stung in the chest by a sting ray witch caused heart seizure....what annoys me about this is that his wife terri hasn't been informed as yet coz she's in tazmania climbing cradle mt...the media can be soooo heartless......my sympathies go out to his wife and kids

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest. It is really sad that he died prematurely.

he was diving, doing a documentary...he got a stung by a sting ray into his chest piercing his heart.
