Get Warcraft 3 battlechest (Warcraft 3 and the expansion Frozen Throne), I highly recommend it. It came out like 2002, but it does not look outdated.

It has great online capabilities, playing online is very fun. (you play through this huge "Battle.net" server)

There are a lot of really fun player-made "custom maps"(mods) on Battle.net, like Sheep Tag, Paintball, Battleships, and many more.

There's even a kart racing game by Blizzard called Azeroth Grand Prix, it has a 3rd person view just like a normal kart racing game would look like. Real fun.

You can team up with other players to play against other teams, you can join clans, etc.

It's a great RTS (real time strategy) game.

If you plan to buy it, make sure you always use Frozen Throne (unless if you want to beat the Reign of Chaos campaigns), because in Battle.Net, there's a lot more options, mainly more possibilities for custom games (such as custom graphics, AI, etc.)

It depends what type or genre of games you like. For action online games, try Matrix Online. Personally, if you perfer non-violent games, try Uru: Ages of Myst which has Uru Live and is considered one of the best games ever.
