There are two types of herpes that infect the genitals. HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-2 is the most common.

HSV-1 Herpes simplex is a virus that causes cold sores. If the area that is infected with the cold sore comes in contact with a mucous membrane of another person (mouth, vagina), that person may become infected.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be found in and released from the sores that the viruses cause, but they also are released between outbreaks from skin that does not appear to be broken or to have a sore. Generally, a person can only get HSV-2 infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. Transmission can occur from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected.

Usually through sex. Even oral sex if the person performing it has cold sores. Yes cold sores are considered herpes. Or if the other person has genital herpes, even if it does not show at that time. There have been a few documented cases of women contacting genital herpes from public toilets, but this is very rare.

Herpes is transferred from person to person through contact. If they have genital or oral herpes, active or not, and they come in contact with someone else's mouth or genitals, then there is the chance of transferring the disease.

You can get it from genital to genital connection. However Genital herpes, and the herpes that causes Cold sores are the same virus! So you can get it from getting oral from someone with a cold sore! Weird huh?

through sex, unprotected or protected. Herpes (HSV) doesn't require exchange of body fluids to get it. You only have to touch the infected area of someone who has it, which could be at the base of a man's penis and testicles, which isn't covered by a condom. You don't even have to have sex to get it. Just grinding on each other (unclothed) could pass it. In rare cases, you could get it on your lips (cold sores) after giving someone oral sex who has it. Here's the really bad news: people don't always know they have it, especially guys, b/c they don't always show symptoms.

Having sex with someone with genital herpes will give it to you for sure... also watch out for someone with cold sores (also herpes) giving you oral sex...
