Potted perennials can be wintered over by taking the pots and putting mulch around them and over them. You don't have to put them in the ground as long as there is an insulating factor working with you. You will not have to water them unless the temperatures stay really high since they will go dormant. I have done this several times even with balled and burlaped trees and they do survive the winter time nicely. Happy planting.

Whatever they are growing in now should be fine, however, the problem you may face is them freezing in pots. It would be a good idea to dig them (without pots) into the ground now and let them spend the winter there. You can always dig them up in spring and replant them in the pots. If you leave them in the pots you may want to wrap the pots with burlap to keep the roots from freezing.
