Most of them know that they made a bad play and got lucky and others are just clueless and don't know anything about pot odds or position, bad players just see that they have a flush draw or have a pair, they see q-j in a pot that has been raised and re-raised and they say sure I'll call that when anyone with a brain knows that they should fold the hand. But in the end you want them playing bad against you because over the long run they will make more mistakes then you, i myself play a lot tighter then i do in a brick and mortar casino, just smile and tell him nice hand then go on to the next hand, he is just trying to get you upset so you will tilt, i have seen many donkeys on-line I'm afraid.

The thing that I can't stand the most about playing poker online are all of the hands to you get beat on when you know you should have won the hand before even seeing the flop! I have just had to sit down and re-consider the hand, make sure that I was in fact making the right call - and then going back to play again knowing that the next time I lose a pot that I shouldn't have lost, all I was really doing is creating a player that I will be able to make money off of in the future - all because they got lucky! Poker players that play this way, all though I hate losing to them, are the players you really want to be playing against. By allowing them to win some pots, you are using the best form of learning - random reinforcement - that they can win if they continue to play this way - and we all know that sure, they will win some pots - maybe even enough big pots to force you out of the tournament - but if you're not playing proper poker strategy, in the end, the odds will catch up to you! If you'd like more information on all aspects of playing poker online, I invite you all to check out the sites listed in the sources section. They are offering a free online poker school, site reviews by players for players, live updated tournament monitors, and a whole lot more! See you at the final table!

Hi,
I believe my answer may totally change how you view this entire situation, but first let me provide a little background.
First, I am by no means a poker professional, but I did supplement my college income by playing online poker. Before I started investing major money, I have read TONS of books, and I was able to turn $50 into several thousand dollars. Not because I am good, but because others are clueless.
Second, I gave you that background to hopefully show that I am no donk, newbie player. I can tell by your question that you are frustrated, and probably lost many hands because of suck outs, but you should actually be happy. The reason is you can immediately mark the guy as an easy target. In fact, I keep a notepad next to me when I play where I write the names of people who do this regularly. You can make TONS of money from them by value betting your hands. One of the leading poker author's (David Slansky) states "In poker, your profits come from the mistakes of your opponents". When a bad player does this, regularly, you have identified a leak that is very easy to exploit!!!
Third, ever heard the expression "Don't tap the aquarium"? Asking WTF when you lose is a horrible idea. You don't want to show the fish that they are making a mistake. You want them to keep playing poorly so you can get all your money. You should never, ever point out bad play by your opponents. Just note it for future sessions, and hope nobody else tells them.
On that note, I am one of those other stupid players at the table that say "NH". In fact, the worse the play, the more likely I am to encourage that person. I am trying to give positive reinforcement to their bad behavior.
In closing, try not to feel frustrated when you lose to a bad beat or when a fish sucks out. In fact, the better play you are, the more this will happen because you are getting your money in the middle with the edge. Just remember, you outplayed this person and in the long term, you will be the one with the money.
Cheers,
Leo

They got lucky. You made the mistake of asking what they were thinking. You should never, ever take on the roll of "poker coach" when you are playing for real money online. As hard as it is for me everytime I get sucked out on, while I'm yelling at the monitor (HOW COULD YOU BE THAT STUPID) I type NH. If you re-enforce bad poker play it's positive expected value for you and anyone else that person plays against. (grin)

You're asking the wrong question...
Say the pot is laying 5 to 1 and some fool is drawing to the inside straight (10.5 to 1). Yes, he's playing poorly, and yes, he will hit his straight on rare occasion (2 out of 23 times to be exact). But all those other times, assuming you play it correct, you get to take his money.
You want this guy at your table! In the long run, if you continue to play well and if he continues to play poorly, he will be giving you his money.
You ask who's ignorant...you're the one who's ignorant. Why are you chastising this newbie's play by asking "WTF"? If enough players criticize these fish long enough, they won't play anymore. And then, you'll be up against a bunch of nut-hugging pros. Do you really want a table full of skillful players?

I play on Hollywood Poker and I totally agree with you. I think some people are geniunely stupid, and some have just learned how to win pots with crappy hands. I've played with people that go all-in every hand until they lose. The good thing about where I play is that you can kick the irritating people off the table. It comes in very handy.

Hi torontoguy,
Here's another way to look at it. Let them keep thinking they are really good, and then take their money. You can turn around and ask them "who sucks now?" :)
