Automation is prevalent in our field, but we do need actual people to check the billing. The more educated the people are, the better.
Automated systems do not keep up with the complex billing requirements of all insurance payers. I think this is actually a good career, and it's one that if you do well, you can work in lots of places and get promotions.

Hello Photoluver,
I’ve been in medical billing for quite a while now and I can tell you regardless of what automation/technology that may be available will not impact you right now.
One of the biggest reasons is that most of the companies that you would/could work for won’t or don’t have money necessary to implement the automation process. The second reason is that history proves that the healthcare industry on a whole is never ready for change and even when it’s mandatory to make a change decision makers (physicians, office managers, etc.) are very slow in doing so.
That’s why there will always be a need for qualified medical coders and billers to drive the businesses that these professionals spend all their time and money to create and operate.
I would say though that you don’t just try to become a medical biller but instead to take it to the next level which is Medical Coding. As you have heard medical billing is really repetitive in nature and some people feel the need to move on later on because of that. If you push yourself to become a medical coder then you will see that this industry is full of intrigue. Not to mention that if you become a certified medical coder the amount of money that you can earn is far above a medical biller. If you are the “Colombo” type of personality (investigator) then you will really do well in this business and you can become well-recognized for your work.
Medical coding can also open many other doors for you. Once you have established yourself and gain the experience you can then branch out and do medical consulting, auditing, HIPAA consulting, etc., just to name a few. This to me is the ultimate because there are people in the world that do that as a freelance specialty and some charge as much as lawyers per hour for their expertise.
Medical billing is a great career to get you started in the healthcare industry but it really should be used as a stepping stone to bigger and better opportunities within the field.

Medical billers will NEVER become obsolete!
Sure, most modern offices and billing procedures are becoming more and more automated, however, the office machines and computers will NOT run without the human behind them. Medical billers do more than just feed numbers and records (dataentry) into a machine or computer...
Medical billers play an important role wherever they work, whether as employed staff members, or working from a home based business as independent consultants.
They are an important member of the medical team and each time a claim is processed and a case closed they feel a sense of pride that can only come from helping others. Here are resources and tips on how to start your own medical billing or medical transcription services from home.
They are experts in medical billing and coding, financial analysis, workflow and utilization of software, collections, insurance claim submission and management, patient and electronic medical records (EMR) management, HIPAA compliance, heatlh insurance rules, insurance fraud issues, networking, marketing, customer services and many other related areas.
Medical billers bring vast knowledge and flexibility to the table when they function as medical reimbursement consultants to medical practices and clinics to help them become more efficient.
