Why does the grass look really short and no trees? Is it because the soil is thinner? Do you think it was scenic along this road? I thought it was scenic and strange looking.

If you find a tree in Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma that is not a cotton wood in a riverbed or a jack pine on western ridges, it was imported. The grass is short due to poor soil and lack of dependable moisture.West of Wichita there is a standing joke that the soil itself is imported...from Nebraska when the wind is from the north, and Oklahoma when the wind is from the south! In fact, the air does have a reddish hue during a south wind and a brownish hue during a north wind.

If I remember correctly, I-35 passes through the Flint Hills (Kansas' version of mountains), and it seemed rather scenic to me, but, then, I like desert scenery.

Mostly there are no trees because you are in the agriculture belt and the land is used for growing crops. The farmers usually keep the trees out. If you are referring to the grass along the interstate then it is short because it is cut regularly. If the grass is farm land then it is grazed to that length. Of course these answers are highly generalized but are mostly true.
