In television shows especially, sometimes a certain actor will get a credit that stands out from the others and look like "John Doe as Stewie Puck". Also, there may be a 'Guest starring John Doe" type credit, even when the character is in the show almost all of the time. And example is Giles from Buffy, or B.D. Wong in Law and Order: SVU. What is the significance? Is it a little bonus for the actor?

It, and other things like the size of the lettering, who their name comes after, etc. are all contractual and negotiated by their agents. Sometimes actors will take a smaller salary if they get a 'And Joe Schmo as Jim'. Its all part of negotiation.

It usually has to do with contracts. Many actors' agents make sure that special recognition is in the contract. This is the same reason that certain actors are listed first on DVD covers, in cast lists, etc.

All issues having to do with billing are negotiated as between producers and actors' agents. The sort of credit you're referring to usually occurs, I believe, in situations where a well-known or "name" actor accepts a small role. He or she doesn't want their name lumped in with the rest of the bit players, so it gets tagged on at the very end of the credit sequence. It DOES get your attention, doesn't it?

They had it stipulated in their contract when they took the job. It doesn't necessarily mean they got paid more, its usually a personal or managerial request so that their name stands out.
Some character actors usually ask for it.
In short its a perk.
