Yes, I was terribly terribly shy when I went away to college. I could not look people in the eye or ask for anything. I went to a behaviorial counselor and with a little work now I am far from shy. In fact, I got voted biggest flirt in my class and I can talk to anyone about just about anything.

Some therapists use virtual reality or imagery exercise to desensitize patients to the feared entity. These are parts of systematic desensitization therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be beneficial. Cognitive behavioral therapy lets the patient understand the cycle of negative thought patterns, and ways to change these thought patterns. CBT may be conducted in a group setting. Gradual desensitization treatment and CBT are often successful, provided the patient is willing to endure some discomfort and to make a continuous effort over a long period of time.

Anti-anxiety or anti-depression medications can be of assistance in many cases. Benzodiazepines could be prescribed for short-term use.

These treatment options are not mutually exclusive. Often a therapist will suggest multiple treatments

Yes, and it does work. I answer as a person with obsessive compulsive disorder (maybe not exactly the same as a phobia) but stepping on cracks or dissonant colors, riding in elevators, needing to touch or tap or step or turn in particular odd sequences before i could move on...are all better after two decades of work... I started taking antidepressants in light doses according to a doctors plan, which helped me to practice practice and practice facing the fear. I knew they were unreasonable fears, but they still guided my life. By practice, I get better and better. It's an amazing freedom, worth trying.

I had a fear of dogs for awhile, then I got a job as a newspaper carrier through high school. Dogs would come charging up at me as I tried to drop off newspapers, snarling and growling and sh*t. Finally, I got mad and started chasing them back up the stairs or through their own yards! If you snarl back at them and wave your arms, you'll scare most of them poopless!

(lol)
