add 4/7 to each side of the equation. To do that you need to find the lowest common denominator between 4/7 and 5/14. Since 7x2=14, 14 seems like a logical choice. Multiple both the numerator and demoniator of 4/7 by 2 and you will get 8/14. Add that to either side of the equation (8/14+5/14) and you will come up with 13/14. This is what x equals.

You have to add 4/7 to both sides of the equation. That cancels out the - 4/7 and x is by itself. Sooo... x = 13/14
x - 4/7 = 5/14
x = 13/14

Yes!
It's easier than it looks.
First, you must change the 4/7 to something 14ths.
So, you multiply both the top and bottom by 2.
That way, the 7 on the bottom becomes a 14.
So now you have x - 8/14 = 5/14.
So now you know the x must equal 13/14ths, because
on the top, 13-8 will be 5, and on the bottom, the 14s
just stay there.
(Key thing here it knowing that you can always multiply both the top and bottom of a fraction by something, as long as it's the same thing, and then you'll have an equal (or equivalent) fraction to work with..)

x - 4/7 = 5/14
turn 7ths into the most-common-denominator --- 14
x - 8/14 = 5/14
x - 8 = 5 ??
13 - 8 = 5
x = 13/14

x - 4/7 = 5/14
x - 8/14 = 5/14
x/14 - 8/14 = 5/14
So this leaves what minus 8 = 5 .......13
X = 13/14
