Taking AP World History definitely looks good on your transcript, because it shows that you are motivated, and that you can excel with upper level course work.
Taking the test was a good idea, if for no other reason than you can include the scores on your application. NYU and Columbia are tough schools to get into and many qualified students will not get accepted. If you got a 4 or a 5 (or even a 3 for some schools), there are lots of schools that will give you credit. If it happened that all of the schools (reach and safety schools) don't accept AP, taking the test could have been a bad idea if you had to pay for it. But only if you knew for a fact where you were applying. Otherwise, you are keeping your options open.
There are lots of schools that accept the scores, but they only accept certain scores. My school, the University of Washington, only accepts 4's and 5's, unless its an obscure test like AP Latin Lit. You will have to search schools that interest you and see if they accept the scores, but don't apply to a school on the basis of whether or not they accept AP. If you have to choose once you are accepted, that could be a factor, but don't waste your time applying somewhere you don't want to go, just because they accept AP scores.

Sometimes the courses don't transfer directly, and yeah, sometimes they overlap or don't count or whatever. It's a pretty complicated thing, and sometimes the universities don't even have all the translations on their websites. You just have to work it out when you get there, which is a pain in the but because by the time you get in to see a counselor, the semester is well underway and you're already stuck with the classes you've chosen, whether they're ones you should be in or not. (If you can't tell, I've had a LOT of trouble with this). Other sticky things can happen too. For example, I passed AP Gov. and went to a University that didn't count that as fulfilling the Gov requirement. It was because at my college, the requirement mandates that the course cover state government, which the AP course did not. They still gave me general ed units for it, but I had to take another gov class. Basically, it's a mess, but good for you that you have so many. I took way fewer than that, but it still gave me a HUGE boost. I'm graduating this fall, after only 2.5 years. Good luck!

No, it's not a bad thing that you took the class and took the AP test. It's just too bad that they colleges you are looking at don't give you credit. It happens at a lot of colleges.
I'm sure you can use the internet and go to college websites and go to perspective students and check out what AP classes they give you credit for. Or, you could call the admissions office of the college.

I went to boston college and got a ton of credits for my APs, enough to graduate early. just because you don't get credit doesn't mean it was a waste. (a) it DOES make your application look better. it shows that you are interested in challenging yourself, that you are smart. (b) many college students are required to take world history 101 as a general requirement. usually having scored a certain grade on the AP will get you out o this requirement, so you have more time to take the classes that actually interest you.

No, it was not a bad idea to take the test. After all, you gained a significant amount of experience which will prepare you better for college. You can search colleges and what AP credits they accept at http://apps.collegeboard.com/apcreditpolicy/index.jsp

Generally you would need to find a school which includes a World History course among its core or General Studies program, and the score you receive on the test has to meet their minimum requirements.
