Nipples. They are not really interested in much else for a while.

Actually newborns will most enjoy looking at your face. They can't yet grasp objects, nor can they actually 'play' with anything yet. They can only see things less than 14 inches from their face, so the crave being held by you so they can watch you. There are few toys they'll really get into, but, here's a few:
an unbreakable mirror (look in baby toy section, they have some that go in cars), soft books with high contrast patterns, or baby gyms with high contrast patterns (think red white and black.)
However, the best toy of all is you! Enjoy this time in your life when you are the center of your baby's attention. It won't last. Resist the urge to constantly put him down in a swing/bouncer/baby gym.

Well, to be quite honest with you, there really aren't any suitable toys for newborns. Newborns don't really play with toys and they can't grasp or hold onto anything anyway. They pretty much just eat, pee, poop, and sleep. Are you needing ideas for an infant? That's a little different. I like just about any of the Lamaze toys by Learning Curve and Whoozits are bright, colorful toys that most infants seem to like. Try going to babiesrus.com or toysrus.com, both websites will let you search for toys according to age (birth-12 months, 12-24 months, etc.). Most toys are geared towards babies 6 months and up though.

Newborns do not really require toys at this stage, but by the time my daughter was 1 month she really enjoyed things that were black and white as she could distinguish the shapes better. Also things that were red held a great fascination for her. You can get tummy time mats that are black and white. Really though she will just enjoy making out the shapes on your face, beginning to recognise those closest to her. Talking and singing are fun but so is just staring at each other face to face. Good luck

Newborns are not interessted in toys as yet, but you can start with a mobile over the crib and a plush toy that you can wind up and it playes a melody, After 6 weeks you can lay them under one of those infant play zone where things dangle, That's about it,

Since newborns can't grab anything yet, try getting some of the toys that hang from the carseat handle. They also see only black and white, so they like things with a lot of contrast, and also things with faces.

mobiles, anything with music, most toys that say newborn or birth+ are good toys. Babies can only see black and white at first so anything black, white and red are really good. Red really gets their attention. Rattles are fun, but most newborns love music. I know that we had a bear that had the sounds of the mothers womb on it and my son loved that.

Toys with high contrast colors (ex. black/white), mobiles, toys with lights and sounds that do not require their participation to work. Rattles, easy grasp toys that are easy to hold in their tiny fists, different textured rattles for them to "taste" the differences. But mostly newborns eat, sleep and poop so don't worry to much about toys. Just a few things will do fine for you to "play" with them. Don't be surprised if your little one stares at you and pays no attention to the toy.

I second the Mom and dad interaction. But as your baby grows, you can incorporate toys that will help with development. For some great recommendations check out http://www.educational-toys-for-tots.com

P.S.The site owner, a teacher, is every nice and will give you a free personalized toy list for your baby. contact her on the "have questions" page or sign up for the ezine for more info.

things the size of their hands. toys with strong colors like the craola 8 pack. they notice things that are vivid in color like black on white or red on white. the chair that they can sit in and bounce (in a few months) newborns dont do much of anything but all of these things will be good in a few months.
