I have eaten at three different El Torito Restaurants in the past two years. Normally I have no problem with Mexican food anywhere else, even in little "hole-in-the-wall" places. For some reason, each time I ate at an El Torito I got symptoms of illness ranging from mild stomach upset to all-out fever and chills (on one occasion it was so severe that I had to take off work for two days to recover from what appeared to be food poisoning). The food I ate was all nicely prepared, served hot and quite tasty. The premises seemed to be clean and no visible problems.
I was just wondering if anybody else out there has had a similar experience at this or even another popular chain restaurant.

Hey Bird,

Just a stupid question, did you happen to have any lettuce or more importantly, did you happen to have a Caesar Salad? I have an iron stomach and I've only been sick at two restaurants;

1). Portabello, in San Diego - CLOSED
2). El Torito, in San Diego - Still Operating

Both times I had a side Caesar style salad.

Tell your local health department. You don't know if they are just one step away from figuring out what is making people sick from;

a). The Restaurant
b). A Supplier
c). A Sick Employee

Most of the above would not be evident in a standard inspection.

Also, lately in the Western United States, there has been a major outbreak of bacteria from shellfish - especially when they are served raw.

Hope you are feeling better!

James in San Diego

I have had nothing but good experiences at El Torito. Unfortunately, my favotire one in Eugene, OR, closed.

Here in San Antonio, Taco Cabana is always in the news for health code violations. I have three coworkers that have gotten food poisoning from them, just like the symptoms you described. Because of these issues, I have not personnaly eaten at any Taco Cabana. Maybe I'm overcautious, but I cannot afford that much time away from work.

It's been years since I ate at an El Torito. Ask your local health department about the latest reports on this one. They're usually okay!
