I work at sea, and we went into Marmaris on a ship (well anchored off anyway).
I thought it was a great place, with lots of bars etc. A very nice beach, and,,,,,the best massage I have had in my life. Now, it isnt one of those sleazy places, it is a family place, where lots of locals go, but they let tourists come in as well. We payed 10 US dollars and that included, the steam room, sauna (with champagne), bathing area, and massage (by a brute of a bloke!!).
The only problem with getting a turkish bath and massage, is that you feel so good when you come out, that its all downhill from there, back to reality.
I would recommend marmaris to anyone, its a great place.

Indeed, it is not a surprise you may not look foward going there. It appears that it has been a target of bombings.
However, it does seem like it has a good deal of history associated with it. Perhaps try to find out about more of the history, for example it was possibly founded in about 6BC and known as Physkos. It also has some great scenery being next to the Aegean sea.

It is awesome, everywhere is white (Greek-like roads, houses).
It is near Bodrum. Bodrum is not so quiet but lots of places to hang out, and also Marmaris. Good choice I believe ;)
