That computer is a lil old so I think It might be a hardware problem. Try resetting your BIOS or insert the re-install windows disk and see if it boots.

You need to flash the bios to support the chip. This is a comman problem people get when using an unsupported cpu type for the motherboard or using a beta bios for it. The motherboard company will say it will work, but windows will hang while trying to configure it for windows (the dmi pool). Try jumping the bus speed to a lower setting & see if it works. I had a friend that got a AMD Sempron 2800 & it would not load the dmi pool (when jumped at 333 like it should) even with a bios update. Jumped it to 266 & windows booted up as an AMD Athlon 1900. Not what he paid for but it is a old pc so not much else you can do other then get it working anyway possible.

The 440lx is an old chipset. It may have compatability issues with the size of your hard drive. When the installation is at the point of building the dmi pool and hangs it is usually due to hard drive issues. You didn't mention what kind of hard drive you have but I would find out and go to the HD manufacturers web site. Most of them have installation utilities that will format and partition your hard drive so that windows xp will install.
I ran into a similar issue with a maxtor hard drive and when I created a bootable maxblast cd and ran it before my windows xp installation it fixed my installation problems detecting my system and creating partitions that were recognizable to my system.
so go to your HD makers software download area and look for there installation software.
Good luck.
