Can someone please explain midi to me so I can undertsand it?

How can I use it?

musical instrument digital interface (midi) converts sounds to patterns that can be reproduced by a midi program on a computer..
You can write music with it using your computer.... or digitize the instrument you are playing and reproduce it on your computer
