I am a single mom and am very strapped when it comes to $$.. However, when there is a birthday I do my best. I have a son who is a big big music fan w/ eccentric taste in the field. He is behind in todays techno world and I would love to supply him with a MP3 for his day. I need to know where the best place is to go and buy 1 that would satisfy his needs/curiosity and my pocketbook. Also any info bout them that I would understand would be grt.

In my humble opinion, iPods are overrated not to mention expensive. The 'SanDisk Sansa c140' is sensibly priced, yet sleek and packed with features. You can purchase one online here: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202641103&loc=111&sp=1

As far as the music in concerned, if your son has a PC, he'll be able to convert his CDs into mp3 format and transfer them onto his new mp3 player. And with an internet connection, I'm sure he can find 'ways' of adding new music to his new mp3 player at no cost at all :)

Ipod is the most popular brand. If h'es a teenager he probably is very brand concious. Nice thing about the ipod there is a gizallion things to buy withit to make it even nicer. Also if you want your son to buy 99 cents online from itunes, you'll want ipod. ITUNES the most popular place to purchase songs legally online can only be oplayed online.

Pretty much the Ipod is also the most expensive. You will find MP3 players of other brands for half the price you would get with an ipod.
Other good brands are Creative and Sandisk and then of course the well known electronics brands.

I got a great little unit online. I was looking for something that wouldn't break the bank and found a great deal for 30 bucks here:
