alice chandler tow motor model FP20-24 serial #1720414146E5.
Not sure if it needs the distributor replaced . the set screw was broken off and i got it to hold back on and open the gap. now not sure if gap is right, it turns over real slow. Jumping it causes the heavy duty cables to turn hot. not a regular occurance, not susposed to happen.

Usually turning over slow is a sign of a dead cell in a battery, or just old or weak battery. Is it an Alis Chalmers Tow motor? Turning over slow and points have nothing to do with each other. Try new points, they don't cost that much. Hot cables are caused by too small of jumper cables, or too small of battery cables. Could also be a short somewhere. If you jump too long or have a bad connection it can get hot too. You have to adjust them at the top of distributor shafts high point. Also you have to know what the gap should be when you adjust them.

Two things. First of all, did you replace the condenser at the same time you replaced the points? Usually it ends up that the condenser has gone bad too and gets overlooked. Was this engine running when you started working on it? If not your starter motor could be drawing too many amps. You might need the armature turned and the brushes replaced in it. Also, is it a 6 volt, or a 12 volt system?

You try turning the distributor while someone cranks it to get the timing back close as this will cause one to crank slow.Set the gap at .020 and try opening a hair or two but no more than .025 You weren't kidding when you said old

Make sure you are getting fire to the points, check if the points are closed when the #1 piston is at top dead center.and if you have a condenser it might be bad.Make sure your plug wires are on correctly. It is possible you need a new distributor cap or rotor button.
