House on Haunted Hill is a different Movie...that one is about 5 strangers being asked to a party at a house that actually is an old asylum...The Haunting of Hill House is about Eleanor and of course was made into a movie called The Haunting...House on Haunted Hill was a remake of the movie by the same name with Vincent Price as the star...both movies are good but The Haunting I didn't like the ending well I didn't like House on Haunted Hill's ending either...but The Haunting of Hill House was written by Shirley Jackson who also wrote The Lottery

I can't believe the misinfomation on this simple-but-slightly-confusing question.

(1) The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 novel e ritten by American author Shirley Jackson.

(2) House on Haunted Hill is a 1959 film directed by William Castle. THE NARRATIVE OF THE FILM IS UNRELATED TO THAT OF THE NOVEL. I suspect that, since William Castle was a "king of mobie gimmicks", he gave his movie a title similar to that of Shirley Jackson's (then popular) novel, but the similarity between the two works ends there.

(3) Shirley Jackson's novel WAS adapted for the screen in 1963 under the title The Haunting, directed by Robert Wise.

(4) Both The Haunting and House on Haunted Hill were remade as movies in 1999.

The bottom line is, though, that THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL are two completely unrelated works.

nope they were two different movies, "House on haunted Hill" was about six strangers who spend the night in a haunted house(think it was a mental hospital maybe) in order to make a million dollars, it was pretty bad...
they did come out the same year though...
