The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 gothic novel by author Shirley Jackson. Arguably the most famous literary ghost story published in the twentieth century, it has been made into two feature films and a play and has often been compared to Henry James’s masterpiece The Turn of the Screw. The novel relies not only upon several terrifying passages, but upon the complex relationships between these events and the characters’ psyches, as well as a dark, sinister mood that pervades the entire work. This article focuses upon the original novel; for information on the film adaptations, see The Haunting. Plot changes in the motion pictures vary from slight to extreme.

As the narrative describes it, “This house, which seemed somehow to have formed itself, flying together into its own powerful pattern under the hands of its builders, fitting itself into its own construction of lines and angles, reared its great head back against the sky without concession to humanity. It was a house without kindness, never meant to be lived in, not a fit place for people or for love or for hope. Exorcism cannot alter the countenance of a house; Hill House would stay as it was until it was destroyed.”

Kate Jackson's classic tale of a haunted house and the people investigating it is one of Stephen King's favorites. It has some real chilling passages and is mostly free from the shlock and gore that clutters up so many of these kind of tales. It is an excellent read and King paid Jackson the compliment that "she never had to raise her voice" to give you a thrill. I liked the book, and thought that the older movie version was better than the new color film.

The remake of this movie was pretty trashy. Lots of special effects, not much else. The original movie, however, was quite scary. You never actually saw anything. You just heard it. At night. When it was dark. When the bedroom doors were all locked because something was walking down the halls. Now its in front of the bedroom door. The door handle starts turning, like it's trying to get in . . .
