well first of they are called turbo transmissions those two type they are booth great transmissions, two different sises, the 400 is a truck type trans and used in a lot of hypo vehicle as well very strong transmission, the turbo 350 looks completely different and but still is a great performer, the smaller of the two in most applications were 350 in the car and 400 in the truck not in all cases tho but in most , one is stronger that the other and will handle more horsepower and torque, one has a square oil pan, and the other is larger and looks like the state of Florida, booth can be installed in the same vehicle usual without to much modification, there is short shaft long shaft in both types, and one the modulator location and mountings, it controls the shifting by the use of vacuum, both have this, the turbo is in the inside design, but say in 1970 you could buy CST first year of the 4 wheel drive full sise blazer,( Custom Sport Truck) later called the K-5 Blazer, most of them had a turbo 350 and they would most of the time out last the truck,But Gm have many Types of transmissions now and those are concider old teck and are very cheep to have over hauled , $250 to 300. dolare s and are cociderd simple compared to todays cars at 900 to 2000 dollare to remove and overhaul

Th350 is smaller, shorter, and lighter. The turbo400, from the factory was only used in big blocks land barges and trucks, and the most extreme performance cars. Th th400 has a larger output shaft. Th or turbo refers to turbohydramatic, I think it's the company that makes them.

yes...like the other answers the TH400 is a stronger transmission in stock form...also FYI it takes 26 HP to drive the pump in the 400 and 19 HP in the 350. Engine RPM = 5250.

What are you talking about? Are you judging their size by their length and nothing else? They each come in multiple lengths which has nothing to do with anything except driveshaft length etc. A 200 is closer to the 350 than a 400. This is a weird question. Why don't you ask about a Turbo 375? How about a 250? What is your real question? What do you want to know?

There is not really much differnce the TH400 is a bit more beefier than the TH350...The name of the transmission was the TURBO HYDRA-MATIC thats why there called turbo 350 and 400

a 4OO trans trans was designed for torque and high HP engines like 454 so forth . 350 trans was used behind engines like 350 ,305 and sb 400, Internal parts are stronger made in 400 compared to lighter smaller components in 350. turbo means built by turbo-hydromatic division of GM

The differnce in the numbers is just a designation. The biggest difference is that a 350 has machined gears (stronger) while a 400 has stamped gears (weaker) anyone who has been inside them both would have realized this. They do have different gear ratios although both of them have a 1:1 final drive (3rd gear). In a daily driver you won't notice a differnce but in a drag car the 350 will last much longer. I have one that turns a mid 9 sec. 1/4 and have learnt this the hard way. They are both interchangeable and only require a shaft length and mount adjustment.

they are both good transmissions the 400 is a little stronger with and electric kick down, the turbo 350 has a kick down cable and the shift patterns can usually be adjusted by the cable where it mounts to the intake bracket behind the carb

The difference is about 50 lbs when you replace them (the 400 being heavier). Neither have an overdrive and that results in shitty gas mileage. Get the 700R4 that has overdrive and you will be much happier.
