Actually, that's the keyword you should use: PC2100, which is a standard designation for that class of DDR RAM module. There will be two physical sizes available: the desktop sized 184-pin DIMM or the laptop sized 200-pin SO-DIMM (as in "small outline").
You didn't say what model number your computer is, but you can look up the exact requirements and how much RAM you can add from HP's online support. Some computers will benefit from adding RAM in matched pairs, but most will not benefit from adding "faster" RAM like PC2700.
I'd also recommend checking other online stores' web sites for current prices so you don't overbid on eBay. Dealram ( http://dealram.com ) is a useful comparison site.

First of all, my apologies to you for owning a compaq.
Seriously, rather than go to eBay, try www.newegg.com, www.computergeeks.com, or www.tigerdirect.com. I am sure that you wil find the RAM that you need and in your price range. Keep in mind that the RAM that you buy might not be compatible with the installed RAM. Sometimes mismatched modules will not work.
I see tigerdirect has 512MB of pc2100 RAM for 49.99.
Good luck!

You can try to search for a faster ram with 184pin and SDram. However, you would also need to find out that what is the maximum ram capacity of your mother board.

Stick with the name brands such as Corsair, Kingston, and Ocz. Also, checking with the maker of the tower can answer this to. You should also try to match the same chip on your present ram stick.

You could use either pc 2100 or pc 2700 ddr ram. If you put 2700 in with the 2100 it will slow down to the speed of the 2100.
