I would love to trace my ancestry, but have very little to go on--I would settle for general info to start. Please only respond if you are Serbian or have lived in that region. Thanks for your help! Naturally, you have the added incentive of a nice 10 point reward for best answer! ;)

I'm from Belgrade, Serbia.
Serbia is a beautiful country, nature is incredible and untouched, people are friendly and openhearted.
This link maybe can help you to find your family roots (Serbian Genealogical Society).

Good luck.

I went there recently. The people are very proud but often misunderstood by others (especially westerners). The country is in the process of reconstruction right now, since many parts of the country were ruined by the NATO bombings in the latest war (e.g the two Novi Sad bridges on Danube still lie in ruins, it's so sad...)
It is a very beautiful country, full of lush forests and gargling waters. The capital, Belgrade looks like it came out from a fairy tale (you should visit Kalemegdan park, then you will know what I am talking about).

The best thing to do I think is to ask the oldest members of your family that live near you about what they remember from the homeland (relatives, names, places of origin , e.g. village or city from where they came from) and then try to see if anyone you know keeps in touch with these family members. If you are unlucky and this is not the case for you, find the place of origin of your family and organize a trip there. Serbia is not an expensive country to visit. Ask the old people there telling them your family name. Someone should know something.

The best thing you can do for yourself is save your pennies and take a trip there. And when there trace any remaining relatives. Do the foot work first. I did when searching for my relatives in another country and it was an experience I will never forget. I did find living relatives and we stay in touch to this day. The journey to find my roots was fascinating.

They like to ethnically cleanse Muslims, using Russian-made weapons. You should look up Serbia on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
